Toolkit 2 3D Character sculpt project - Research

 Character sculpt research

For this project, we have been given 10 different potential charcater briefs, of the briefs, the characters that catch my attention the most are the steam punk explorer and the cybernetic samurai. Both of these options give me a lot of ideas straight away that I can play around with. To start off the project, I will have a look at a variety of different environments related to both of these character briefs, as this will give me a good idea of what sorts of things these characters would be carrying around with them, I will also have a look at different existing character designs in both of these areas in order to see what sorts of things have been done in the past, what worked, and what doesn't work so well.

Moodboards

For my first moodboard, I have looked at a variety of different samurai style characters and armour designs, some more traditional, while others take a more fictional twist. I wanted to have a variety of different sources of inspiration for if I decide to go with this character brief, as there are a lot of ways I could take this idea, either focusing more on the traditional samurai aesthetic but adopting some more technologically advanced detailing such as glowing parts inbetween the armour plates, or taking a more modified route, including some more futuristic clothing aspects, mixed in with some more traditional armour-like sections incorperated into the design.

For the steampunk explorer brief, I found a few different steampunk themed characters, some of the character designs put a lot more emphasis on the mechanical aspect of the theme, with the character being outfitted with a load of different gadgets and other mechanical devices, while others are taking a more inventor style approach, with the character not really being outfitted in the actual steampunk devices, but being dressed more like they tinker around a lot.

Having done some initial visual research into these two different character briefs, I think I will be going forward with the cybernetic samurai brief, as I have found a lot more inspiration for this kind of character design. I also have a fair idea of the different sorts of accessories and smaller details that I can outift the character in, while for the steampunk explorer, I can't really think of anything that isn't already on the designs that I have looked at on my moodboard. Going forward, I will start to look more into the different kinds of environments that I could be basing my cybernetic samurai around, and how that could determine what kinds of equipment they carry around with them, and whether they're going to be wearig more lightweight armour for either more maneuverability, or to keep cool, or whether they'll be more heavily armoured for a more combat centred approach.

For the intial design process, I have been thinking about why there would be a need for a samurai style character in a more technologically advanced age, and came to the conclusion that they could be living in some kind of post apocalyptic cyber city, so more effective weapons like guns would be more valuable and less efficient to use due to their requirement for ammo, which wouldn't be in production anymore, so melee weapons such as swords would become a lot more common for people tasked with defending against wild animals that would have moved into the city zones after being overgrown.

Based on the general setting idea that I have come up with, I will start working on some initial sketches for my character design. To start off, I will be focusing on the character's general outfit, then once I have a more concrete idea of what I want to go for, I will start working on designing some different accessories or tools that the character could carry around on their person, including designs for their weapon.

3D visual research

For the visual style of my 3d model, I will be going for something fairly stylised, for inspiration, I went onto art station to have a look at some character artists, and picked out three different ones that caught my eye the most. The first character model is along the lines of what I would be aiming for with my modelling process, as I want to incorporate a variety of different textures using zbrush, looking at different materials and how I can use the different texture brushes in zbrush in order to achieve the look of different clothing materials and armour.
