Toolkit 2 - 3D Week 3

 Deformers

This week, we are looking at the deformation tools in zbrush, these can be used to change your sculpt in a variety of different ways. There is a long list of different deformation types allowing a huge variety of different ways that you can change your model. Some of the tools work on multiple at once, where as some only work on one at a time. The deformation tools also take into account masks you might have applied to your model.

The tools available in the deformation tab are;
- Offset - This moved the unmasked sections of the sculpt along one of the three axes
- Rotate - Allows you to rotate the unmasked areas along one of the three axes
- Size - This can be used in order to scale the section of the model that you are editing in three directions, or just one if you want to make the model longer, wider or taller
- Bend - The bend tool is used to curve a sculpt along one axis
- SBend - The S bend tool is similar to the bend tool, the only difference being that it creates a higher poly bend in the sculpt rather than just splitting it where the model is bending
- SSkew - The SSkew tool can be used to warp a sculpt along an axis
- Flatten - The flatten tool makes a sculpt turn into a 2d shape, at maximum, turning the sculpt into a circle
- Twist - Using the twist tool deforms the sculpt along one of the three axes in a more circular motion, warping the model from the centre out
- Taper - Tapering your model with the taper tool can either grow or shrink your model from one point outwards, when used on a cube, this will create a more wedge like shape
- Squeeze - Unlike most of these tools, the squeeze tool by default works on two axes at once allowing you to squash your sculpt from the middle.
- Noise - Adding noise to your sculpt with the noise tool applies a bumpy texture to the surface of your model
- Smooth - Smoothing your model with this tool allows you to flatten the surface of your sculpt until it has a smoother look, removing any noise that you might have gained from the modelling process
- Contrast - Contrast works similarly to the smoothing tool, except both ways, it allows you to make either a more defined texture, or to increase the smoothness of your sculpt
- Inflate - The inflate tool scales all of the details on your sculpt at once rather than scaling the model from the centre out, it scales all of the polys out at the same time.
- Sphereize - Sphereize turns your model into a sphere
- Gravity - This tool deforms your model in a way like it's being effected by extreme gravity by either deforming it downwards or upwards
- Perspective - This tool deforms your sculpt as though it's being pulled towards a vanishing point
