Industry practice week 5

 Presentation evaluation and feedback

This week, we pitched our visual novel idea to the class. For the presentation, my section was talking about the legal and ethical considerations for the game. In order to achieve this properly, I had to do research into the different areas we'd need to be considering for the creation of our visual novel. The first two areas I looked at was the use of different fonts and sound. The main consideration when looking into fonts is some companies have trade marked their fonts, so using the font without permission could land you in legal trouble with the company that owns the rights to that font, it is a similar case for music and sound effects. In the presentation, I talked about this and how using fair use fonts and royalty free music is a good way to avoid getting into legal trouble with companies that own different fonts and sounds.

Another point I talked about was the use of references and how they can be used properly, I included talking about tracing artwork in this section, as this is a form of plagerism if you claim the artwork is your own, which is something that not everyone seems to know. Overall, I'm pretty happy with what I researched and talked about for the legal considerations for the visual novel as I covered everything that's relevant for visual novels.

The second half of what I researched for the presentation was the ethical consideration when creating a visual novel. This inculded areas such as the use of certain language, imagery and symbolism. The first point I covered was how we'd talk about the different mental health problems, as the subject is a very sensitive topic and people can be offended quite easily if their mental health issue is mis characterised or if they're told that they're certain to go down a certain path, which isn't necesarriy true. I also talked about the use of different symbols and how using certain symbols out of context could cause offense if there's no reason for them to be there.

Overall, I'm very happy with what I presented for my part of the pitch, I feel like I talked about the most important legal and ethical considerations when creating a visual novel. One thing that I would have liked to do though is to go into a little more detail on some of the legal considerations such as the use and creation of different fonts, as I only really discussed one way to avoid getting into trouble with companies that have trade marks on different fonts.
