Industry Practice Week 4
Presentation setup
This week we will be presenting the ideas for our visual novel explaining the general idea of the game and what areas we will be exploring in regard to the breif. For my section of the powerpoint presentation, I will be looking into the legal and ethical considerations for the project and how this will effect the way we do different things.
Fonts:
As visual novels are very text based, we will want to be using a font that works with the general theme of the game rather than using a default font, this comes with its own legal considerations however, as companies are able to copyright fonts that they have made. This is something we will have to consider when looking for fonts to use in our game as we don't want to end up using a font that someone else owns and has copyrighted. In order to avoid this, we can look for fair use fonts on different websites such as DaFont.
Sound effects/ Music:
When looking into sound and music for our visual novel, we will most likely be relying on use of royalty free sound effects and music, as using music that people own would be copyright infingement. We could also potentially work on our own music and sound effects if we have time, this way we wouldn't be at risk of copyright infringement like if we used royalty free sounds. A third way to get around copyright infringement is to get permisson from the person/ people that own music or sound effects.
Other legal considerations:
One large area to consider when creating a visual novel is the artwork and how the artwork is created. Using references for the artwork is a good way for getting a good idea of how to draw a pose/ structure and environment, however tracing the reference images and claiming it as your own artwork is a form of plagerism, so this is to be avoided at all costs.
When considering the name for the studio, it's important to take into account other games studios that could be using the same or a similar name, this also comes down to whether the studio name is copywrited or is able to be copywrited.
Ethical considerations:
When creating a visual novel, it's very important to consider the ethics. When dealing with sensitive topics such as mental health, which we are covering in our game, we need to make sure we don't talk about the different mental illnesses in a disrespectful manner or in a way that would make people feel uncomfortable or angry about the way the topic is being tackled.
Use of different symbols and logos out of context is also something that should be considered when making design choices, for example, if a symbol of significant historical impact is being used in the visual novel, but there's no real reason for it to be there, this would be considered as an inappropriate use of that symbol even if offense wasn't intended.
