Building Alliances week 4
Initial sketches
This week, we are starting to properly sketching designs for our game. The areas I will be doing thumbnails for include level designs and Key art. To start off, I wanted to look at some level designs.
To start off, I came up with three different level designs exploring how the levels could be constructed and what sorts of different layouts we could have in our game. With the level structure, I wasn't focusing too hard on being true to the anatomy of the human body as the levels are microscopic cutouts of different organs rather than a full organ. I did however try to get in the idea of different detials such as bones, pores and different pockets of fluids.
I also explored the idea of what the areas where towers are placed would look like with a tower in them, as fungi are the towers that we will be using to combat the microplastic enemies, but at the same time fungi are still dangerous for humans. I will now share my ideas with the rest of my group to get some feedback for later designs.
Next I will do some initial sketches for the key art that could be used for things like the loading screens, or for the title screen.
For the key art designs, I wanted to show off the towers and environments in a closer up manner, as some rough ideas, I have drawn what the areas would look like if you were actually in them, rather than the environments being viewed from the outside. This helps to give better context for the levels as normally you wouldn't be able to see the top side of the environment the game takes place in, but the key art is a way to do this without having an impact of the playstyle.
Having completed some initial sketches for the game, I will start discussing the next steps with the rest of the team as I feel like while some of my ideas are good, they need to be more refined with input from other people.
Methods of preventing micro plastics
The first way of preventing coming in contact with microplastics in food is to stop buying food that has plastic packaging, using plastic utensils such as choppingboards and spoons and another quite large one is not heating food in plastic containers, this includes reheating food in things like takeaway boxes. This is supported by an article on the Health & Wellbeing section on the Guardian "The shredding of plastic is increased when containers are exposed to heat. "Hot water in plastic-lined cups and takeaway containers also release microplastics and nano particles, in some cases, trillions per litre"
This really puts in to perspective how easy it is to ingest micro plastics, and this is only one of many ways microplastics are able to make it into the body. However, reducing the amount of plastics we use in the kitchen, especially as utensils and containers should be a huge step forward to reducing the amount of microplastics that are making it into the human body. While this might not be used as a tower in our game, we could potentially have it as some form of pre-level buff that you're able to add before you go into a level, decreasing the difficulty of the level in some way.
